Well, hello there, kind folks. If you’re visiting this blog of mine, I presume that you have a certain interest in the cinema. As for me, even since my early childhood, I have had a deep love of everything related to movies and television. As far as I can remember, I have been more at ease in front of a screen than in the yard, outside, playing. It is a great way to travel, though other people’s stories, without having to foot any kind of steep bill. Over the years, I feel that movie-watching has even fuelled my own creativity.

All that being said, I welcome you in my Cinephile’s Nest. I hope you enjoy it here, feel free to come back at any time. Here you will find reviews of current movies and older ones. TV shows also. Some classics that have remained some of my favourites, some that have disappointed me. I will use a very basic star (*) system to grade them from 1 to 5 (5 being sliced bread level). Remember, these are just my tastes. I will try to explain in each review what I liked about these particular movies, without giving spoilers.

I welcome you all here, enjoy yourself.

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

Genre: Thriller
Directed by: Lynne Ramsay
Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller
Running time: 112 minutes

Adapted from the Lionel Shriver novel of the same name, We Need to Talk About Kevin tells the story of a mother having to come to terms with a horrible crime committed by her 15-year old son, Kevin.

I did not quite know what to expect, and, wow, was I ever blown away. This movie is a straight punch to the gut and leaves you sitting there in awe by the end of it. In a movie beautifully directed by Lynne Ramsay, we go back and forth through the story in seamless fashion.

What to say about the acting? Tilda Swinton carries this hard and harsh film on her frail shoulders and she does it brilliantly. We forget the actress and we feel compassion for that character, a woman who has lost everything because of her son and who now has to pick up whatever is left of herself to go on with her life. Everybody in town is judging, so she has to carry that weight also. Like all parents, she has made mistakes, but the viewer cannot help feeling for her.

The two actors portraying Kevin, at two different ages, were solid also. They really brought out that troubled child character without making him over-the-top, be it in a comedic or scary way. The tone was just right.

All in all, a really solid film that will stay on my mind for quite some time. Highly recommended.
