In the 1970’s, American musician Sixto
Rodriguez released a couple of albums that did not make much of a splash in the
US and then he vanished out of the public eye. For some reason, Rodriguez’s
albums made their way to South Africa, where the artist became a true cultural
phenomenon. In the late 1990’s, two Cape Town men decided to go on a mission to
find out what had happened to the singer/songwriter their country loved so
much. Rumors had it that he had committed suicide on stage, but what was the
truth?
If you have yet to see this film and if you
don’t know much about it, I don’t want to say too much and ruin it. All I will
say is that it is a wonderful piece of documentary cinema that is well worth
your time. It is a heart-warming tale about the power of music as something
that has no border or limit. This film has made me smile and shed a tear or
two. I highly recommend it, and I also recommend the music of Rodriguez. Great
stuff.
