Well, hello there, kind folks. If you’re visiting this blog of mine, I presume that you have a certain interest in the cinema. As for me, even since my early childhood, I have had a deep love of everything related to movies and television. As far as I can remember, I have been more at ease in front of a screen than in the yard, outside, playing. It is a great way to travel, though other people’s stories, without having to foot any kind of steep bill. Over the years, I feel that movie-watching has even fuelled my own creativity.

All that being said, I welcome you in my Cinephile’s Nest. I hope you enjoy it here, feel free to come back at any time. Here you will find reviews of current movies and older ones. TV shows also. Some classics that have remained some of my favourites, some that have disappointed me. I will use a very basic star (*) system to grade them from 1 to 5 (5 being sliced bread level). Remember, these are just my tastes. I will try to explain in each review what I liked about these particular movies, without giving spoilers.

I welcome you all here, enjoy yourself.

An American Crime (2007)

 Genre: Drama
Directed by: Tommy O’Haver
Cast: Elliot Page, Catherine Keener, Hayley McFarland
Running Time: 98 minutes

This film is based on the true story of sisters Sylvia and Jenny Likens, the daughters of carnival workers, who were left by their parents in the care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a poor woman with multiple jobs for little amounts of money. Gertrude Baniszewski saw two more children in her house as an opportunity for more money, but Sylvia soon became the target of horrible abuse at the hands of her caretaker and the rest of the family.

This film has a TV movie feel, but the acting makes it a lot better than you would expect from that genre. Elliot Page and Catherine Keener are both very solid in their respective roles. They carry this film on their shoulders. In spite of the TV movie feel, the director sets an atmosphere that is so heavy, in large part due to the subject matter. Some scenes are hard to take, when you realize this really happened. Thankfully, not everything is explicitly shot. The twist at the end was a ray of hope in a bleak setting. A mean trick that was if you do not know the endgame.
