Rupert Pupkin is an
aspiring stand-up comic that is greatly delusional about his own potential. He
becomes obsessed about appearing on the talk-show hosted by Jerry Langford,
which he sees as his potential big break. After being turned down, Pupkin
decides to abduct Langford and blackmail his way on TV.
This is a very creepy dark comedy. Robert De Niro is great as Pupkin. It was a different kind of sociopath for him to play. As for Jerry Lewis, I don’t think he had to stretch too far to play an arrogant established comedian.
This film never really got its due share of love. I just think that it dealt with too dark a matter to really be embraced by the public.
