While in Berlin for a biotechnology summit with his wife Liz, Martin Harris is involved in an accident in a taxicab that plunges into the river. Harris is rescued, but he’s without papers and suffers from memory loss due to a blow to the head. As he gains back some of his memories, he finds out that somebody else has taken his identity and his place alongside his wife. He goes a trek to figure out what happened and to prove who he really is.

The plot to this film is a little messy and convoluted, but the acting and the direction made the whole thing better in the end. Some twists were stretching the limits of believability, but the whole thing was entertaining and neatly wrapped up in the end.

Simple comme Sylvain (2023)

Sophia est une professeur d’université qui vit une vie rangée et peu enlevante depuis 10 ans avec son conjoint Xavier. Elle fait la rencontre de Sylvain, un ouvrier embauché pour travailler sur leur chalet, et sa vie s’en retrouve toute chamboulée. Elle s’embarque alors dans une folle romance avec un homme tellement différent d’elle et de son monde.

Peut-être que les critiques dithyrambiques ont créé des attentes trop élevées pour moi, mais j’ai d’abord été un peu déçu par ce film. Le jeu des acteurs est bon et l’histoire est intéressante, mais on dirait que je m’attendais à plus ou à autre chose. Quelques jours après avoir vu le film, j’ai décanté le tout, et je crois comprendre mieux l’œuvre. C’est très bon.

Léo (2018-2024)

À l’approche de la quarantaine, Léo se sent un peu seul dans sa vie de jobines et de semences de pot au cœur du petit village fictif de Walton, inspiré de la Beauce. Il décide de changer de vie et de se trouver un travail stable dans une usine à gâteau. C’est là qu’il fait la rencontre de Cindy, avec qui il tombe en amour et décide de se bâtir une vie plus sérieuse.

Cette série de cinq saisons est une création de l’acteur, auteur et humoriste Fabien Cloutier. J’ai toujours bien aimé l’univers et l’écriture de Cloutier. Ça me rejoint souvent, et Léo ne fait pas exception. On s’attache rapidement au personnage principal, joué par Cloutier lui-même, et aux membres de son entourage. Ici, l’auteur et acteur principal a su s’entourer d’une distribution fort talentueuse. 

Certains personnages sont un peu caricaturaux et quelques épisodes sont moins bons, mais, somme toute, c’est une très bonne série drôle et touchante à la fois, criante de vérité montrant la bonté profonde des gens simples et sans prétention.

Fifty Shades Freed (2018)

Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are now married, but their honeymoon filled with marital bliss is disrupted by the return in the picture of Jack Hyde, Anastasia’s former boss. He is out for revenge against his former assistant, but he may also have some weird history with the groom.

This is the third installment in the movie franchise based on the infamous E.L. James novels. The greatest thing about the films in this series is that they get shorter as they go along. I guess that, with such a paper-thin story, there is less and less to say. The story is still full of clichés and the acting is still nothing special. The characters are so not believable. The cat-and-mouse storyline here has some interesting potential, but it gets muddled in the end and dropped fast in favor of the asinine relationship between the two main characters.

After leaving Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele starts a new job as an assistant to Jack Hyde, an editor at Seattle Independent Publishing. Soon enough, though, Christian is back in her life and they rekindle their relationship, promising openness and the absence of rules and punishments.

I just find this franchise, based on the E.L. James novels, so filled with clichés, it is unbelievable. That old used idea of the good girl who just wants to redeem and save the bad boy, the tortured soul. And, of course, the tortured soul is a good-looking millionaire. Beyond the few sexy scenes this film offers, I just find it silly, clichéd and uninteresting.

That 70's Show (1998-2006)

In this series set between 1976 and 1979, a group of teenagers hang out together every day taking drugs, listening to music, dating each other and getting into all kinds of mischief. They mostly hang out at Eric Forman’s house, often to the dismay of Eric’s no-nonsense father Red. In the group are Eric and his on-and-off-again girlfriend Donna, Jackie, Kelso, Hyde and Fez.

A great comedic show, with loads of laugh-out-loud moments. A few weaker episodes here and there, but, overall, a great show with a loaded cast, full of talented folks. Even the support cast is strong here. My favorite characters are actually the adults, Red and Kitty Forman. Especially Red, who can threaten to put his foot into an ass like no other.

Dans la maison (2012)

Claude, un élève brillant et manipulateur, attire l’attention de son professeur de français au Lycée Gustave Flaubert avec des textes voyeuristes qu’il écrits en s’immisçant dans la maison et la vie de famille d’un de ses camarades de classe. Germain, le professeur, voit un écrivain potentiel dans Claude et encourage cet exercice, qui va à l’encontre du bon goût et de la décence.

J’ai adoré ce film. En tant que fervent de littérature, j’ai compris le désir d’être écrivain. En même temps, il y a l’aspect quelque peu sordide du voyeurisme dans toute cette histoire, et on se retrouve à se demander ce qui arrivera ensuite. Le jeu de toute la distribution est solide. Bien franchement, un film que je compte bien revoir. La fin m’a un peu surpris, mais j’ai finalement compris le message. Tout un film.

Simon est un jeune adulte qui travaille à faire des spectacles comme drag queen. Alors que sa mère, une célèbre chanteuse d’opéra, revient brièvement en ville après avoir quitté sa famille il y a plusieurs années pour vivre pleinement sa carrière, Simon s’engage dans une relation fort toxique avec un nouveau collègue, Olivier. Cette relation affectera grandement ses repères et ses liens familiaux.

Avec une distribution fort talentueuse et une histoire fort captivante, sur un milieu qui est très actuel mais que je connais peu, j’ai facilement embarqué dans l’histoire. J’ai beaucoup aimé ce film fort touchant.

After completing their investigation into the Amityville murders, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are called upon for another case in Enfield, England. The couple travel to the London suburb to investigate the matter of a potential poltergeist affecting the lives of the Hodgson family in their council house.

While not as fresh of a film as its predecessor, this sequel is still an effective paranormal activity story told on screen. The acting is solid enough and the story pulls you in. While I do not believe in that sort of thing, I can still find stories like this interesting when told by talented folks.

Anastasia Steele is a 21-year-old English literature student who fills in for her roommate who is sick with the flu in an assignment to interview business mogul Christian Grey for the college newspaper. After this first encounter, Grey and Steele start falling for each other and start engaging deeper and deeper into a sadomasochistic relationship that will bring them quite far off the path they both expected for themselves.

This film is inspired by a series of books that became quite the phenomenon among my family members. Personally, I did not read them beyond excerpts found here and there. These passages almost made me quit reading altogether. I can be as kinky as the next guy in the right circumstances, but I’d rather be whipped than read bad literature.

As far as the film goes, the first installment is an improvement upon the book, but that is not saying much. The acting is not very good and the story is silly. The characters come off as so fake and unbelievable. The books were all made to make old ladies feel all tingly in their naughty parts without the guilt of actual porn. The film has a bit of sexiness to it, but it not enough to make it good cinema.

Papy fait de la résistance (1983)

Durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, la majestueuse demeure parisienne de la famille Bourdelle est investie par les forces allemandes. Dans ces circonstances difficiles, la famille tente du mieux qu’elle le peut de résister sournoisement à l’ennemi.

Ce film est adapté d’une pièce de théâtre. Il a été dédié à Louis de Funès, qui devait y jouer un rôle au moment de sa mort. Cette œuvre burlesque contient son lot de moments rigolos, même si le scénario est assez léger et si le jeu y est assez gros. Un divertissement bien correct. Tout de même plaisant d’y voir tous ces gros noms du cinéma français.

This TV series examines the lives and career of The Beatles and it’s four members, from their humble beginnings to superstardom. Over the course of eight, hour long episodes, we go through their history with considerable details. I love how, in this documentary, a big piece of the attention was given to the actual music. We also get to hear from the three surviving members (at that time, since this was done before Harrison’s passing) and their entourage, and Lennon’s presence is felt through archive footage. This is absolutely great stuff.

Blanche (1993)

Ce téléroman historique, qui est en fait la suite de Les Filles de Caleb, raconte l’histoire de Blanche Pronovost, fille d’Émilie Bordeleau et d’Ovila Pronovost. À l’âge adulte, Blanche désirait pratiquer la médecine, mais cette formation lui est difficilement accessible à l’époque en tant que femme. Forte de caractère et indépendante, elle devient infirmière et part éventuellement pratiquer la médecine dans le Grand Nord québécois. 

Comme Les Filles de Caleb, ce téléroman est basé sur l’œuvre d’Arlète Cousture. L’histoire est toujours intéressante, mais le jeu des comédiens est plus inégal. Dans certains cas, c’est un peu gros. Somme toute, série qui a moins bien vieilli que son prédécesseur.

Between Us (2016)

After six years together, Dianne and Henry are hitting a plateau in their relationship as they wonder what is next for them. They feel the expectations of marriage and children and moving into something more permanent together. Soon, the pressure has them straying further and further from the nest.

The story feels very real and it is not without charm and interest that I ventured into this film. Unfortunately, the characters themselves felt a little bland to me. In the end, while not bad, this movie was not great either. Just mid.
